Terms and conditions

Interviews: Participate contacts each applicant to arrange a face-to-face or phone interview with the course director. Acceptance into the course is confirmed after the interview, with a letter of offer.

Payment: If accepted, applicants must pay the course fee immediately to secure their places. The fee can be paid by direct deposit, cheque, money order or credit card (MasterCard or Visa). Local students can pay in full (up front) or in four instalments. International students must pay in full (up front). A fee agreement issued with the letter of offer explains these options in detail.

Other costs: Students are not charged extra fees or levies to produce the feature film. The only other course costs may include transport to and from workshops and shooting locations; accommodation, if shooting takes place away from Sydney; and meals during workshops and/or shooting days.

Cancellation: Enrolled students who want to leave the course after the start date do not receive a refund. If paying in instalments, they must give four month's notice or a quarter payment in lieu. International students can use the letter of offer to apply for a visa. If the application is not approved and evidence from the relevant government department is provided, Participate will issue a refund.

Communication: All students must be able to read, write and speak English. Fluency is assessed during the interview.

Attendance: Students must attend at least 85% of classes to pass the Participate Filmmaking course.

Auditions: Participate guarantees that all students will take part in the feature film project, but does not guarantee the specific production role(s) that individuals will be given. If a student wants a particular role, they must audition for it. The class select the cast and crew, guided by their supervisors and mentors. This responsibility is an integral part of the training.

Participation: All students agree and acknowledge that taking part in the feature film project does not imply that they are employees or contractors of Participate, and/or any of its associated companies or sponsors. Students who do not take part in the feature film project may forfeit their accreditation and/or film credit. Participate openly states that if the feature film project is commercially successful, it will distribute 50% of the profits equitably among the participating students, supervisors, mentors and schools. This is Participate's own ex-gratia initiative and does not constitute payment for services.

Conduct: Reasonable behavioural conduct applies at all times when taking part in course activities, on or off site. Students, supervisors and mentors are not allowed to smoke or drink alcohol. Use and/or possession of intoxicating substances will be reported to the relevant authorities and will result in automatic expulsion, without a refund. We reserve the right to refuse entry to course premises or to discontinue services to students who misbehave, are disruptive and/or refuse to accept professional guidance from supervisors or mentors, without any refund of fees.

Copyright: Participate Film Academy retains full copyright of all story material, footage, feature film(s), documentaries and/or other intellectual property produced as part of and during the Participate Filmmaking course.

Stella Maris Institute policies: Please refer to the institute's policies, which are available in the online Student Handbooks provided at www.stellamarisinstitute.com.au.

They agree with Stella Maris Institute policies, made available through its website. They acknowledge that Participate Film Academy and Stella Maris Institute will use the details provided above to contact them about the course, and to provide details about other relevant course and training opportunities.
